My Work

Welcome to Papers and Thread,

Creating bespoke handmade paper lampshades, I originally studied Design Crafts at Cumbria College of Art and Design, where I specialised in handmade paper and embroidery.
A long career in retail then followed, with the passion for my artwork always remaining. A second redundancy gave me the spur to turn that passion into a business.
For my paper I make a base pulp by recycling computer paper, then use dyes, various fibres, threads and differing drying techniques to create my unique pieces. I quickly discovered the magic that happened when light shone through the paper which led me to lampshades and tealights.
Inspired by the natural world, my colours and designs are mainly based on the plants and flowers all around us, often incorporating pressed leaves and petals in my work. I also use various printing techniques to add another depth.
Packs of my paper are also available to inspire your own creations.
I hope you enjoy my work.

First I recycle computer paper by soaking and then blending it into a pulp.
I then dye the pulp using a variety of dye methods including natural dyes.
The excess dye is then strained from the pulp (which can be re-used for paler shades).
The pulp is then added to a vat of fresh water and I add various complimentary threads and fibres to add texture and depth to the paper.
I then suspend the pulp on a mesh frame, flip it over onto lining paper for a smooth finish (or thin newspapers for a more textured finish) and press flat to dry. The drying process takes several days.
